WGA West & Rare Event
We proudly partnered with Rare's Entertainment Lab to host an exclusive workshop for Writers Guild of America West members, focusing on how to naturally integrate climate-friendly actions into mainstream storytelling. Rather than creating "stories about climate change," we showed writers how sustainable habits can fit authentically into any narrative.
The workshop featured writers who have done this seamlessly and authentically including Jonathan Green and Gabe Miller (Superstore), Wyatt Cain (Poker Face), and Beth Appel (Sex Lives of College Girls) In a hands on scene breakdown from each show, we demonstrated how environmental themes enhanced the shows as compelling plot points. We explored how characters' everyday choices, from food to housing to transportation, can reflect contemporary sustainable living without feeling preachy or forced.
The exclusive, guild-only format created a safe space for writers to experiment with climate themes and ask practical questions about incorporating environmental elements into their projects. Writers learned how sustainable behaviors can create character depth, drive plot development, and reflect authentic modern life.
Impact:
40+ WGA writers gained practical tools for integrating climate themes into their work
Established model for guild-based climate education that respects writers' creative autonomy
Connected environmental themes to successful shows across genres (comedy, drama, procedural)
