Climate Week NYC 2025

From Monologue To Momentum: How late-night TV makes the complicated accessible and relatable

This private event was hosted at Solutions House during NY Climate Week produced by Hollywood Climate Summit in partnership with WGA East and Sustainable Entertanment Alliance.

We assembled the dream team of late-night writers and producers for an evening exploring late-night TV’s mastery at breaking down complex, urgent issues while keeping our attention through a perfect balance of jokes and gut punches. We dove into the craft behind Late Night With Seth Meyers, Last Week Tonight and The Daily Show, discovering how their writers transform depressing headlines into conversations that feel like catching up with your funniest, smartest friend.

Rollie Williams and Nicole Conlan shared a comedic rundown of the oil industry's propaganda playbook, specifically, their tired claim that modern life is "owed" to oil. They screened clips from Fuel-less, a climate propaganda film so cringeworthy the room split its sides laughing. Their message to writers? If you're worried climate topics will feel unnatural in your shows, trust us—it won't be as awkward as what we just watched.

We then broke into groups and turned wild climate headlines into punchlines and visual sketches. The pitches? Blue liquid tampon commercials demonstrating carbon sink capacities. Rom-com episodes featuring meet-cutes around epic recycling failures. It was proof that when you give space to play at NY Climate Week, innovation and connection follow. We couldn’t convince people to leave the brainstorming tables to go get drinks, on us!
